Can’t get motivated to write your next blog post?

Is it glaring at you menacingly from your ever increasing to-do list?

And when you finally muster the strength to visit your blog, the last post was published so long ago, just looking at the date makes you cringe.

You are not alone, my friend. And I have a remedy to rescue you from this can’t-be-bothered-to-blog funk.

Stop blogging right now.

Before you write one more word, ask yourself why.

Why are you even bothering with a blog anyway?

If you can’t answer this, then writing a blog post it a complete waste of time

Don’t write because it’s on your to-do list.

Don’t write because an SEO marketing expert told you to do it.

Don’t write because it feels like something you SHOULD be doing.

Before you write anything, start with your WHY.

Finding Your Why (hint: it isn’t hidden under the sofa cushions)

Start with your biggest Why. Why did you start this business anyway? Who are you serving? Why? Why them? Why you?

Got it? Good. Now turn your attention to your blog.

Why do you want a blog on your website at all?

What value does the blog bring to your business?

What value does it bring to your customers?

Sit down and scribble down everything you can think of. And then look at those reasons and dig beneath them. Ask why again. Keep asking why until you can go no further.

And even now you’re still not ready to write your blog post.

Look at the content you had planned. Why does this need sharing? Why will someone read it?

Now You Can Write

Now you know your Whys, the motivation to write will come easily.

And you can write with purpose, intention and meaning.

You can write your blog post because you want to. Because you understand it is part of a bigger picture. Because you believe it adds value to your business and your customers.

Blogging is no longer something you SHOULD bother with.

Blogging is something you WANT to bother with.

Make Something Pretty

As you’ve put so much effort into it, keep your Whys somewhere safe. Maybe make a pretty poster with some felt-tips?

  1. Laura

Thank you Emily, glad it is useful.

  2. International Elf Service

I love this post – it’s so easy to get swept away with everyone’s opinions or to push through when we don’t actually have anything bursting to be written down. This is just brilliant for focussing the mind – THANK YOU!
