A cringe-free approach

to launch, flash sale and promo emails

I’ve been writing online copy for more than 15 years, and I still hate writing my own promotional emails – so believe me when I say ‘I get it’.

As soon as I sit down to write something even slightly salesy about my own offers, my brain goes silent – which is literally the only time it gives me any peace.

Writing one email that says nice things about an offer I want to sell is hard enough, but often I need MULTIPLE emails.

MULTIPLE!!!!

To give my offer the best chance of success, and give my subscribers a reasonable opportunity to know it exists (so they can buy it) I to need to send more than one email out about it.

But HOW! (it’s ok, I’ve used up my quote of exclamation points now, I’ll calm down for the rest of the post).

What can I put in these emails?

How many different ways can I possibly say ‘please buy my thing’?

And there are certain promotional email structures I don’t want to follow because they don’t align with the way I like to run my business, or treat my subscribers.

These promotional emails say things like:

  • If you want this great outcome this is THE ONLY way to get it
  • This offer is the BEST way to do this thing
  • If you took yourself seriously/respected yourself you’d invest in this
  • The REAL reason you aren’t yet a success

… I can’t type any more examples, my soul is withering….

must

stop

thinking about

hyperbolic high-pressure sales copy….

OK – I’ve recovered.

So I know I don’t want to say any of those things.

And I also don’t want to send emails that repeatedly say ‘buy my thing’.

So here are some alternative messages I structure my promotional emails around:

  • This thing exists here’s how you find out more
  • If you have this problem I have this solution
  • If you’re curious about this thing, here’s a small sample of it
  • Here’s what other people have said about this thing
  • Here is why I created this thing
  • Here’s the deadline for buying this thing (for this reason)
  • This is for you if (and it might not be right for you if)
  • Here’s some questions you might have – and how to ask me if your question isn’t listed here

You’re welcome to borrow any/all of those for your own promotions.

Try reframing ‘I must write an emails that sells this thing’

to

‘some of my subscribers will already be a great match for this offer, what can I send them to help them notice that and decide for themselves if now is the right time to buy’.

Doesn’t that feel lighter?
