Making Marketing Change More Manageable
(when you want more or different but don’t want to break what’s working already)
This blog post is part of a collection looking at the most common predicaments clients come to me with:
- They’re great at what they do, but don’t know how to turn that into steady sales
- Their marketing works, but it feels like an unsustainable grind
- Their marketing works, but they’re ready for more or different (clients, offers, niche) ← you are here

The Predicament
Your business is ticking over nicely. You know what works, and it works well enough to keep the sales steady.
But you want more. Or different.
This is when people often come to me saying…
I think I need a whole new website… maybe a new email list… a total rebrand.
What if I announce this change to my audience, then it doesn’t work out?
What if my existing people don’t want to come with me on this new adventure?
Viewing The Molehill At Close Range
Understandably, because this is your business, and you’re considering something important that could significantly impact your future, you are viewing this change at very close range, and it’s hard to see anything else. It looks like a huge, challenging mountain.
That is not the viewpoint your online audience has… to them, this looks more like a small bump that could possibly be a molehill, and might not even be as big as all that.
Shuffle
Even if it really was a mountain, you know how you’d tackle it?
One small step a time.
What would it look like if you gently shuffled in the direction you wanted to go in.
Want to start working with a different ‘ideal client’? Create one offer for them, with limited quantity and availability, find a business friend who can tap into that audience, and offer a commission, or a favour swap for them to promote it.
Feeling pulled to talk more about your spiritual beliefs but not sure how that will be received or how comfortable you will feel? Create one piece of marketing content (email, podcast, social media) that mentions this aspect of your life, and see how it goes (for you and your audience).
Want to start a podcast but not sure about committing to weekly content for the rest of your life? Create a limited series of six episodes, publish, promote, then reflect and evaluate in a few weeks.
You don’t need to have the complete picture in your head.
You don’t need to have everything updated, rebranded, and aligned with your Big Change.
You don’t need to make a big, awkward announcement to your online audience.
You can do those things if you want to, if you feel excited and inspired to do them,
But if those things are filling you with dread, worry, and inertia, forget them, and turn your attention to finding the smallest forward step you can comfortably take.
Shuffle Kick-start Questions
- What do you want to be different in your business?
- Why? What will that mean for you, your business, your clients/audience?
- Is there an activity or task that you can stop doing right now because it isn’t aligned with that vision (to free up some of your time and energy)?
- What are all the things you think you need to do to be able to make this change? Now highlight the ones that feel easy, quick and/or exciting.
- What are all the things you think you need to research, decide or consider so that you can make this change? Now highlight only the things that must be tackled for you to take your next small shuffling forward progress step.
