Working time and income reports
I felt pretty good about 2020 (despite its obvious drawbacks)
I was consistently making around £5,000 in revenue each month. One month I made more than £8,000.
But instead of getting high on that success, I used it to beat myself up (this is a classic Laura move. Self-flagellation is my signature move). By the Autumn I’d started punishing myself with the same thought over and over….
‘If I could work more hours, I could make more money’
I begrudged every minute wasted on housework, and every interruption from my teens.
I saw monthly sales figures as the measure of my worth, and I grumbled about anything that stopped me inflating that number.
Thankfully that didn’t last long before I got a grip on myself and remembered that I run this business around my life, and I will NOT run my life around my business.
So instead of muttering ‘I could make more money if I could work more hours’, I made myself a new mantra: ‘I wonder how much money it is possible to make, and pay myself, while sticking to a time budget of 20 hours per week’.
The 20 hours wasn’t plucked at random. I trialed a couple of weeks only working when it suited me, trying to work with my natural energy levels, and still fit in my other responsibilities and plenty of time to spend with friends, family, or just by myself. And 20 hours came out as the sweet spot for enough working time to keep my business going and growing, without compromising my home life.
The £100k is pretty random. I’m not really attached to the number. I just want to see if I can go beyond £5k months, when I aim a bit higher.
These blog posts are Monthly Income and Hours reports from the start of 2021, as I discover what’s possible with my part-time business.
September 2021 – Launched a thing, took part in a summit, worked too much
August 2021 – Air show, Chessington theme park, live round of course….didn’t quite hit my money target.
July 2021 – Tanks, turning 40, and hitting my income and working hours goals
I worked far too much, didn’t quite hit my income goal, but did find time to go to the beach.
May 2021- I worked a little bit less, made quite a bit more, and feel like I’m on the right trajectory.
Wondering how much money a small business can make on part-time hours? How can a busy Mum make more money without sacrificing time with her family?
